Rag Mag 10
Hey punks, what a hell of a week, hope everyone is hanging in there. Busy weekend going to a small comic book convention in New Hampshire and the hassle flea in Cambridge where I got to see a lot of friends and contributors to this here mag in person. Pretty inspiring to see all the protests this weekend across the entire country and people starting to organize and fight back against this fascist bullshit. This weekend at least gave me some hope. Anyway, can’t believe we are already at issue 10! Keep sending in flyers, comics, art, reviews, and columns. This week we have Lindsay’s Lost and Found, Wasteland Chick reviews UK82 classic Summer of ‘81 by the Violators, Film Freak volume 2 with Coco A Go-Go (ed. notte, smash city ruled), and Creature’s Double Feature.
Whats up party people ? Hope everyone is surviving out there. This week I’ve dug through some film bopping around all over the place. We visit my old bedroom , my teenage years and a couple bars. Enjoy!! - Coco
Casey as Kendra , Jamaica Plain, MA 2006 , 35mm slide film
This was taken in Casey and I’s old bedroom. We were sharing a room and a bed at the time. We’d fall asleep listening to suicide ( by suicide) or the movie “ fire in the sky” which is probably the reason we were always having fucked up dreams. He was working at boomerangs which is where he scored this killer dress and I believe that Mondrian Wallpaper. I was working at the salon and all the old ladies thought he was my boyfriend. These stills were characters we were creating for a video idea. I shot this photo on slide film and then cross processed it to get the bolder colors.
Salty and Josh , The Druid , Cambridge , MA, Halloween 2012 , 35mm
If you couldn’t guess this is from Halloween . We were at the Druids Halloween party and were able to score the very coveted back booth. I love Halloween parties. At a certain time the druid clears out all the tables and chairs and it just becomes a big costume dance party. Salty debuted the “pickle nose” this particular year which made for many laughs any time he tried to sip his guinness. Josh is one of Salty and I’s oldest friends and how we met so this is a special photo to me. I shot it on a disposable camera .
Brooks waiting for a train , 2001 , 35mm
Brooks is my sister, we’ve been best friends since we were 8. We were teenagers in this, and I took this at a train platform not sure where. I just always liked how the glass gave it all these overlays and how ghost like it came out. Brooks lives on the west coast now and I really miss hanging and fucking around with her.
Brooks at Smash city records , Boston , MA , 2001 , 35mm
This was our favorite record store and I still think of it all the time. I used to beg the guys that worked there to give me a job which they never did ha. I’m sure I was a really annoying teenager that just wanted to talk about records , so despite that they were really nice to me and even would occasionally give me the employee discount . I remember they had a wall of all these local show bootlegs ( all on cassette ) that I was obsessed with . If memory serves they were $5 ( my price range) . I loved getting them. The recordings were raw and wild and I would listen to them dreaming of the shows I wish I was at.
Matty at Bruar Falls, Brooklyn 2011 , 35 MM
This is a photo of my dear friend Matty ( the drag world knows him as Horchatta) but he was occasionally my old band's self proclaimed Merch Cholita. This was from GONE BAD’s record release - $5 bucks for our 7inch what a bargain! I remember having really bad cramps all day leading up the show, like crippling can I please stay in bed type pain. Anywho , I had to do this really long scream in one of the songs and all of a sudden mid scream , I thought I peed my pants which is embarrassing. Turns out I had an ovarian cyst rupture so was covered in blood! Did I scream so loud it shook my ovaries ???? Who’s to say. Luckily for me and everyone else I was wearing black, but it was a night to remember. Speaking of remembering, I remember a lot of this night was me running around taking snapshots like this with my disposable camera. I was really excited about our 7inch so I was trying to get spontaneous reactions from people at the show.
Wasteland Chick
Am I a girl? Am I non-binary? These are legitimate questions that showed up in my brain for no reason. Hopefully Trump doesn’t start spouting that it’s only legal to be a boy or a girl. Salutations, fellow Wasteland Chicks. Welcome back. This Wasteland Chick’s fresh back from seeing Cigarette Camp play and buying cool stuff at a flea market, so it’s gonna be a heck of a week! Now let’s play a quick game: How many Tesla’s did yours truly flip off just today? If you guessed 2, you’d be dead wrong! The answer is 33! Yes, 33! Don’t let those dumbasses indoctrinate you, fellow Wasteland Chicks, keep your brains safe from those worms, and even calling them that gives worms a bad name. Anyway, let’s get down to business: Today we’ll be reviewing Summer of ‘81 by the Violators, picked out personally by It’s Casual Dan Wars. This song slaps! And I don’t say that often, believe me. Let’s start with the melody and rhythm, I give it a 9 out of ten. The rhythm and melody are very vibe-able and even radiate feminist energy, which I think the song is about. It gives the song a very “girl power but not in the crappy H&M T-shirts way” vibe to it which fits the song perfectly. Next, the lyrics: These lyrics are awesome, and a 9 out of ten! They also radiate girl power, and slap pretty hard. They are a bit confusing to figure out what they are saying, but are pretty cool. The lyrics give perfect girl power and feminism vibes, which are perfect for a gender-questioning Wasteland Chick like myself. Now for the overall review: I give this song a 9 out of ten, a very good, feminist, underground, vibe-able song that’s perfect to listen to on your way to a flea market, driving to the grocery store, or just sitting in your parlor eating breakfast. Hope you have the testes to ride with this Wasteland Chick and the rest of Ragmag, fellow Wasteland Chicks! Bye!
Sincerely, WASTELAND CHICK(Don’t forget to join the club!!!)
· Tell us about the item you lost (or found)—what’s the backstory?
I lost my glasses during cigarette camp’s (1st) set at the D4 show last fall.
· Where and when did you realize the item was lost (or found)?
Dan Wars kept yelling at me during the set about how I lost my glasses, but I was wearing my glasses and Dan's were off. I thought he lost his glasses. Then Jeff Poot said we both lost our glasses.
· Was there a specific song or moment in the show when you think it got lost?
Best song chalk.
· Did you go back to look for it? How did that go?
I immediately stopped to look for it and everybody stared at me and Dan.
· If you could give a message to whoever found (or lost) this item, what would you say?
Fuck you.
· What’s the most sentimental or irreplaceable thing about this item?
I can't see without them.
· How would you describe your relationship with this item before it got lost (or after you found it)?
Wore them every day for at least 5 or 6 years.
· Was the crowd or show vibe in any way connected to why the item got lost or found?
Yeah, cuz I was moshing a little.
· Has anyone tried to claim it back yet (if found)?
Nah. They were mine. Turns out that I was wearing my glasses the whole time and Dan's were in his pocket. I thought he lost his glasses and he thought I was going to lose mine. It was pretty funny.
Yr ol’ pal Creature had a “cool weekend” with packed days Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday trip with Wasteland Chick and Dan Wars to the Little Giant Comics Old School Comic Show in New Hampshire for Wasteland Chick to cosplay and of course buy comic books. They had cool guests including Jim Steranko who we met years ago in Boston and I’m glad to see is still in the sharkskin jacket and beatle boots, love it. I picked up some cheap little Lulu’s, Tubbys and Fritzi Ritz’s. Dan got to meet former Editor in Chief of Marvel Jim Shooter and it was a really great moment. He was full of funny stories about those days. P.S. I really wanted that butt-man print.
On Sunday, Mittens, Wasteland Chick, and our buddy Dracula went up to Cambridge to go to the Hassle Flea and show. Pushback were finishing up right as we got into the flea, and I was bummed to have missed them. We hung out and did the flea market thing, then went and got a quick bite. We ran back to catch Ben Hersey’ spoken word/performance and it was a good time. Cigarette Camp was up next and played a fun set. It was getting late, so we missed the last band as we piled into the car to drive back to Providence. I caught some photos of Cigarette Camp.
With such a packed weekend, I took the chance to relax on Friday night by doing my favorite thing, listening to records. Records of the week for me are the Welsh post-punk classic Pyst by Datblygu. Just love this band.
Next up is Suspicious Beasts - Might Die Tomorrow. Last album from this band featuring Yusuke Okada from blotto and lost balloons. Downer garage psych rock at its best.
Soul song of the week is Joe Haywood’s Say You Will. What a voice. Sometimes that’s all you need to make a good song.
That’s it for Rag Mag this week punks. Check out the events below and hope to see you there.
